Men are sometimes ashamed to admit they have erectile dysfunction. Thanks to the innovation in science and the modern drugs that are available, erectile dysfunction can be helped. What exactly causes this dysfunction? According to physicians there are many underlying causes—both physical and psychological—that can be named as erectile dysfunction causes. One would be vascular diseases. Like atherosclerosis or the narrowing or hardening of arteries, when blood flow in the body is reduced, one can experience impotence. A reported 50% of those who are impotent in males have this kind of disease. Diabetes mellitus can also be the culprit leading to erectile dysfunction. This disease is listed under erectile dysfunction causes because the high levels of blood sugar can damage nerve impulses and even blood flow. Both these nerve impulse and blood flow are known to be crucial to achieve erection. Drugs are also said to have an effect on erection. Today, more than 200 drugs are associated with erectile dysfunction. This may include anti-depressants, heart medications, tranquilizers and drugs that control high blood pressure. Another factor that is considered as one among the erectile dysfunction causes is hormonal imbalance. Testosterone deficiency can ultimately result to a lesser desire to have sex, or decrease in libido—the sexual hormone. This would, of course, result to a loss of erection which is the erectile dysfunction. Excess of hormones such as prolactin, on the other hand, may lead to reduced levels of testosterone and similarly lead to erectile dysfunction. Other causes can be neurological trauma or ailments and pelvic trauma. Surgery and radiation are also found to cause erectile dysfunction for males.
